Background:Finasteride, a 5α-reductase inhibitor, is prescribed for male pattern baldness. The pharmacological action of finasteride is to inhibit the activity of the enzyme 5α-reductase. This study evaluated the efficacy of 5α-reductase inhibitor finasteride for hair growth in a mouse model of male pattern baldness. Results showed that treatment with finasteride was significantly superior to placebo in the growth of hair in male mice. In addition, the dose of finasteride was significantly lower than that of placebo. In order to determine whether the lower dose of finasteride may be effective, the mice were treated with finasteride daily for four weeks. Results showed that treatment with finasteride was superior to placebo in the growth of hair in male mice. The results indicated that finasteride may provide a suitable option for treatment of pattern hair loss in male mice.
Methods:The study was conducted at the University of Texas Medical Branch Medical School (MBL) in Houston, Texas. Male mice with a condition known as hyperandrogenism, or a condition known as male predilection, were used in this study. The male mice were maintained at the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research, Texas Medical Center (MBL). The mice were housed under the same conditions as the mice of the present study. All mice were provided access to food and water. The experimental procedures were approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee of the University of Texas Medical Branch (MBL).
Results:Male mice were treated with finasteride (30 mg/kg) daily for four weeks. The results showed that treatment with finasteride was significantly superior to placebo in the growth of hair in mice. In addition, the dose of finasteride was significantly lower than that of placebo in the growth of hair in mice. Furthermore, the results indicated that the dose of finasteride was significantly lower than that of placebo in the growth of hair in mice.
Conclusion:Finasteride has shown potential in treating male pattern baldness.
Ascension Male Pattern Baldness Injectable Treatments (Finasteride, Merck & Co. KGaA) is a 5α-reductase inhibitor that prevents the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The drug is a potent inhibitor of Type II 5α-reductase, which is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT. The effect of finasteride on DHT was determined by using the mouse model of male pattern hair loss.Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the main male sex hormone in the body, and it plays a significant role in male pattern baldness. In the past, it has been proposed that DHT is the principal male sex hormone, and it plays an important role in the development of male pattern baldness. Therefore, it is believed that the drug is useful in the treatment of male pattern baldness. Keywords:Finasteride, male pattern baldness; 5α-reductase inhibitors; DHT; DHT-suppressing drugs
